Alex Underkofler Nominates Phylisha Carter for JBA Liberty Bell Award

Alex Underkofler Nominates Phylisha Carter for JBA Liberty Bell Award

Phylisha Carter, a social studies teacher and faculty advisor of the Ribault High School Future Lawyers Program, received the Liberty Bell Award from the Jacksonville Bar Association at the 2023 Law Day Luncheon. The award is given to someone who promotes a better understanding of the rule of law and has provided exceptional service to the legal community and the Jacksonville community at-large. Carter coordinates the program, which pairs attorney mentors with student participants. Students study a mock trial fact pattern and prepare opening and closing statements as well as witness examinations, just as attorneys do when preparing for trial. The program also includes field trips to colleges and universities, courthouses, and other government buildings, such as City Hall. The program concludes with a mock trial competition at the Bryan Simpson United States Courthouse against students participating in the program at Raines High School with mentors from the D.W. Perkins Bar Association. Alex Underkofler assisted with the Ribault High School Future Lawyers program and had the honor to nominate Ms. Carter for the award.
